Determining whether your home has single-phase or three-phase power is essential when installing an electric vehicle (EV) charger. Here’s how you can figure it out, along with how Arlec products can help with your EV charging setup, no matter your power phase.

1. Check the Number of Main Switches on Your Switchboard
The quickest way to figure out your power phase is by looking at your switchboard. There are usually several switches (or poles) on your switchboard. One of these will be labeled as the Main Switch, which controls the power supply to your home.
  • Single-phase power: If you have a single main switch, your home is powered by single-phase electricity.
  • Three-phase power: If you have three main switches, you’re connected to three-phase power.
This simple check will give you a clear indication of your power supply.

2. Look for Phase Indicators on Your Switchboard
If your switchboard has been labelled correctly, you should find some phase-related markings. Look for these common terms and symbols:
  • Single-phase: You’ll likely see terms such as Single Phase, 1-phase, or Mono-phase.
  • Three-phase: For three-phase power, the board may be marked with Tri-phase, Polyphase, or 3-phase.
3. Consult a Licensed Electrician
If you're still unsure, you can always call a licensed electrical contractor to help you identify your power phase.
